The fact that sababpathy mudaliar has stopped instructing his brother,pained sabapathy pillai very much.He was indeed at a loss to know the reason.he was very much annoyed to see that his brother was indifferent to his studies at such an impressionable age and that he was whiling away his time according to his whims and fancies. therefore, he complained to his own friends and to those of Ramalingar about his negligence and indifference.He thought that his disapproval of his brother's conduct would correct him and make him attend school regularly.But Ramalingar did not at all take to heart his brother's reproof.he pursued his own way in spite of his brother's reproaches.
sabapathy pillai could not tolerate this for long.As he loved his brother Ramalingar intensely,his anxiety to educate him was even greater.But Ramalingar's indifference drove him to a fit of violent anger.In his passionate desire to mend his brother,sabapathy pillai ordered his wife not to give food and clothing to Ramalingar in future.This command was very shocking to that kind woman who was bestowing motherly attention and care on Ramalingar.All sisters-in -law can not be expected to be kind towards their brothers-in-law.But of this good womanit could be said that she was able to know bt intution that the boy was no ordinary boy but a highly evolved soul.though there was no apparent reason for her belief and faith ,she,as if ordained by God,bestowed upon Ramalingar her tender love and care rarely found except in the case of one's own mothers.So she quailed in her heart to put her husband's words in action.
On the one hand,she had to obey her husband; but on the other ,her deep love towards the young boy urged her not to starve him and deny him clothing.She felt sorry that her husband was not able to realise the greatness of the boy.She thought over the matter and due to god's grace,decided not to carry out her husband's orders.She informed young Ramalingar of the fury of her husband and advised him to go by the back door and have his food when his brother was away from the house.Ramalingar did as he was asked to do.In this manner he spent several days.
on the day of the anniversary of his father's death,sabapathy pillai invited to his house all his friends and relatives for a feast.When he was chatting joyfully with those assembled there,he thought of his brother,Ramalingar.It pained his heart that his brother was not present to dine with them even on that day,Sabapathy pillai's wife entertained all the guests gladly,but she did not take her food as she was awaiting the boy anxiously.
after 4o'clock in the evening,Ramalingar slowly came into the house by the back door.His sister- in -law welcomed him with extreme kindness. She gave him the food which was cold and tasteless.Without saying anything Ramalingar began to take his food patiently.His brother's wife could not bear the sight.her heart was full of grief when she saw the boy eating the unpalatable food without any murmur.She at once burst into tears.As soon as the boy saw her shedding tears, he also began to cry.He then asked her why she was weeping.The kind woman said,"you are the proper person to dine with your brother and the other guests.because of your delinquency you have to eat like this and that too without the knowledge of your brother.How long are you going to suffer this lot? If you obey your brother's words and live up to them, it will certainly do you much good.Unless you change your behaviour, who will take care of you afterwards?.Hence, you must pay heed to your brother and give him entire satisfaction.This is all what I want you to do".
