His Prayer and divine vision of Lord Muruga

Ramalingar was exceedingly happy that his simple request had been granted without any objection. He felt that it was really a boon to him.He started,in that room, a new life of solitary prayer and meditation. He hung up a mirror on one of its walls, decorated it with fragrant flowers and lit the customary oil lamp before it.he burnt incense and camphor before it,and fixing his gaze steadily upon the spear-like image of the flame in the mirror, lost himself in deep contemplation of Lord Muruga.he was absorbed in such a kind of prayer continuously for several days. When he attained the age of nine, his devout worship bore fruit and he saw the divine form of Lord muruga visible to his eyes in the mirror.

He says "lord muruga appeared before me with his six beautiful faces resplendent with glory and grace, with a garland of kadamba flowers over his twelve shoulders and with his lotus like feet that grant beatitude.the vision was like that of his incarnation at Thiruthanigai (A mountain shrine near Arakkonam in the north arcot district).he appeared on his peacock with the cock-banner in one hand and the sharp on the other.

On that day,by the grace of Lord Muruga, his learning became complete and his face shone with wisdom. What would have taken several years for others to master, was at his fingers' ends at that age.he became ripe in his learning and wisdom without training or teaching by any human agency.he became master of all the great works in tamil as
well as in sanskrit at the age of nine.having been blessed with his grace,Ramalingar would often sing emotionally in praise of god remaining within his room.At times, his sister-in-law would sit at the door, listen to his sweet outpourings and feel elated.

Sabapathy Pillai and his friends were contented because Ramalingar stayed at home and attended to his studies. They did not know anything about his learning under inspiration from god. However, Ramalingar has spoken of his initiation into learning by divine inspiration in his songs. He refers to this at several places in his songs.he refers to this at several places in his Thiru-Arul- Pa (The Divine Songs of Grace) and in the prose work called truthful Invocation. In one Stanza he says addressing Lord Muruga,"I learnt Under you and I listened unto you".In another stanza,he says that Lord Muruga, the Ocean Incarnate of Grace, had taken him for His servant in the age of nine. He also refers to the fact that he was made to sing the praise of God,in thrilling metres even in such an early period of his life when he never had the knowledge even to its infinitesimal part to sing His bountiful Mercy.

In the prose work cited above, he is more explicit in his recollection of this early grace and guidance. He says that God Almighty inspired him from within and enabled him to master all knowledge, without the aid of a teacher, which at a pretty early age, would be very difficult for him to gain.

In this connection,I feel it my earnest duty to clear the readers of one doubt. They need not think that Lord Muruga,God Nataraja and siva are different gods of Saiva Religion.According to this religion, there is only one God Almighty and these are variuos divine forms which he takes out of His infinite Grace to bring salvation to the suffering souls.
