When Lord Krishna revealed His Viswarupa to Arjuna, the
latter was not able to see it initially. The Lord then gave him
divine eyesight to enable him to see Him. But the Lord’s
form was seen by yaksas, Gandharvas, celestials and sages.
If none can see His Viswarupa without being granted divine
sight, then how did they see Him?
He enabled them to see Him, as He did in the case of Arjuna.
But why did He want them to see Him? The reason was
that He wanted the world to know the privilege He had given
to Arjuna. He wanted witnesses to Arjuna’s good fortune.
That is why He revealed His form to others too, said Valayapet Ramachariar in a discourse.
Yasoda saw the entire Universe inside Krishna’s mouth,
but that was a sight given only to her. No one else witnessed
that. But in the case of the Lord’s Viswarupa, He made it
possible for many to see it.
Different people reacted differently upon seeing the
Lord’s Viswarupa. The celestials wanted to get closer to Him
to see the amazing sight. Tears flowed from their eyes. They
thought Arjuna was an extremely fortunate man. They
offered an anjali to the Lord.
But while the celestials paid their tribute to the Lord,
there was a difference between their attitude to Him and the
attitude of the sages. The celestials usually seek favours from the Lord, and once their wishes have been granted they
move away. But the sages always want to be near Him. The
sages already had knowledge about the nature of the Paramatma, of how the Supreme One was bigger than the biggest and yet smaller than the smallest, and this they were now seeing in the battlefield.
Even demons saw His form. The reason why the Lord
made this possible was because He wanted to instil fear in
them, so that they would not harm His devotees.
