The faith quotient

The Vedas or the Srutis, which are ‘revealed truths,’ form the basis of our life. Believed to be the very breath of the Supreme Brahman, they are considered to be the perfect knowledge of God and their authority is accepted as divine. Rishis and sages steeped in meditation have listened to this and have had revelations of the truth which they have interpreted for us.

But since all cannot grasp the profound truths, the Lord Himself incarnates time and again to restate the eternal laws of the universe and to establish dharma on a firm footing by destroying adharma. His duty is to protect the good from the over powering evil forces. When Krishna expounds the Bhagavad Gita, He is the Jagadguru who clearly explains the highest doctrine of surrender that is always relevant to the human dilemma, pointed out Sri Keeranur Ramamurthy in a lecture. “Offer your heart to Me who loves you dearly.Be devoted to Me; worship Me and you shall find Me. This is my promise. Lay aside all fear and all else. Seek Me alone as refuge. I shall redeem you from sin and bondage.”

Underlying this powerful promise is the ultimate goal of life, liberation, and the implications of the truth that all jivatmas have come from Him and that one’s moorings are with Him alone. The experience of the sway of the divine force within oneself makes one understand his dependence and connection to the Lord, who alone can grant salvation, and strengthens the jivatma’s desire to surrender. The essence of Saranagati Tatva is the unconditional faith in the
protecting power of the Lord, and realising the truth that the individual by himself is incapable of saving himself. Faith is powerful and is a hope to human beings. Faith leads to prayer and when the Lord listens to the sincere plea of the devotee, many impossible things happen in people’s lives. When the entire city of Lanka was in flames, Asoka Vana and Hanuman’s tail alone did not burn. Both Hanuman and Sita prayed with absolute faith and sincerity for other’s safety.
