There are two types of Acharyas. Some acharyas offer instruction to disciples who ask them for clarifications and advice. They are known as anuviritti prasannacharyas.Another category of Achayas instruct disciples even when the latter have not asked the Acharyas for instruction. They are known as Kripa Matra prasannacharyas. They have nothing but kripa (mercy) towards their disciples. They spontaneously instruct disciples because they are sympathetic.
The vaishnavite Acharya Ramanuja belonged to the second category, for he imparted to a huge gathering of people what he had learnt from his Acharya.Ramanuja had been instructed by his own acharya only after repeated requests from Ramanuja, but Ramanuja of his own accord offered instruction to many.
When Acharyas instruct their disciples, they do so for four reasons, said Kidambi Narayanan in a lecture.First of all, they are sorry for the disciples on account of the latter's ignorance. The disciples sometimes ask an acharya for instruction, and the Acharya likes them and so instruct them. Thirdly, the Acharya is anxious to tell others about his experience.Fourthly, the Acharya's duty is to offer advice to others.
The Chandogya Upanishad says that Acharyas are full of compassion and are generous. They give us spiritual advice just as cows yield milk.
An Acharya has only good thoughts and self control. His speech is gentle and sweet. His conduct is impeccable. He is comparable to God.So exalted is his position. However educated he might be,he never shows off his learning, but is like an innocent child. He is accessible to all. He never loses his temper. He should be a confidant of his disciples. This means he should inspire them with confidence in his ability to help them.
We should know the value of anything that we possess. If we do not know the value of a ruby,it is to us an ordinary stone.like wise, only if we realize the value of an Acharya will we celebrate his greatness.
It is our duty to be aware of the greatness of our Acharyas who are like Rubies.
