The crux of spiritual practice is meditation on the Supreme Brahman and this implies knowledge of Him.But the nature of the Supreme Brahman,the Upanishads state,is inscrutable.His infinite glory can not be grasped by the human mind;He is beyond the grasp of the eye,the mind or the intellect,they emphatically declare.But the Upanishad seers who have struggled to grasp the Eternal truth have directly realised His infinite glory through their constant meditation and they know Him to be the cause of all beings animate and inanimate.That is why Lord Krishna states that He can be known and grasped through the vision of the seers of truth(Tatva Darshinas).
It is pointed out that if the seers had experienced difficulty,it goes without saying that the spiritual aspirant has to cross many hurdles in this path to realisation.
But the Lord himself shows the path of spiritual practice(Upasana),detailing the various steps involved and also of the different kinds of worshippers (Upasakas).
An aspirant qualifies for meditation only when he has the Jnana about God.
Once Jnana is gained,the mind gradually becomes pure.One-pointed meditation on God's glory helps the mind that is fickle,restless and uncontrollable to become calm.A worshipper develops the Bhakti Bhava when he is able to see the presence of God in all aspects of creation.Then one realises that God is in oneself as much as He is in all creation.
This is gained by hearing(Sravana) about God's greatness,singing(Kirtana) His glories practising austere vows,worshipping Him with devotion and meditating on Him at all times.
Worship of the divine in great souls is directed only to the Lord as the supreme being.They know Him as the Eternal Truth that has always been and will continue forever.This truth is indelibly etched in their consciousness and they offer homage to Him.They praise the Lord's might in their heart and sing His glory with Joy.In this manner they strive to attain liberation.Knowledge of God has to be in one's consciousness.
